The Importance Of A Dietitian In Your Health Journey

A Registered Dietitian (RD) is a trained and certified nutrition expert who specializes in providing evidence-based nutrition advice tailored to your unique needs. Unlike general nutritionists, RDs are equipped with advanced training in nutrition science, medical conditions, and dietary therapy to offer personalized recommendations that improve your health and well-being.

The primary advantage of working with a Registered Dietitian is their personalized approach. They take the time to assess your eating habits, understand your health objectives and concerns, and create a plan that fits your lifestyle and preferences. With their in-depth knowledge, dietitians can help you navigate various health challenges, from managing chronic conditions to optimizing sports performance or improving general well-being.

Working with a nutritionist or dietitian in Winnipeg ensures you receive professional, science-backed advice that helps you make informed decisions about your diet and health.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a Nutritionist and Dietitian?

The title “registered dietitian” is protected by law and only those who have completed specific training and met certain education standards can use this title (unlike the term “nutritionist”). Registered dietitians complete an undergraduate degree at an accredited university followed by a dietetic internship. They are regulated health care professionals and must be a member of their provincial College or regulatory body in order to legally practice in their respective province.

How will a Dietitian help me reach my goals?

Registered dietitians have the skills to help guide you in setting appropriate health goals and building habits and eating behaviors to support your overall health. As your “nutrition coach”, the dietitian is there to educate you and provide support. Making changes to improve your eating habits and health can be challenging. We will assist you in establishing a road map to help you along your health journey.

How many sessions will I need with the Dietitian?

This is person specific. Certain individuals require only 1 session where as others like to touch base as many as 1-2 times a month. We recommend at least 3 sessions. this will hold you accountable until your next “check in date” and will give you a chance to see what strategies worked and what did not work. We highly recommend 3 sessions. Session one sets the foundation Session 2 lets us see what works, what doesn’t work and reasons why and allows us to re-strategize or come up with new methods. At this point, you may already have new goals.

Is a Winnipeg dietitian covered by my insurance?

Many private health insurance plans cover the cost for registered dietitian services. Please contact us to determine whether you have coverage through your provider and if you are eligible for direct billing.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see the dietitian. However, your insurance provider may require a referral to be on file prior to your first claim submission.

What is medical nutrition therapy?

Medical nutrition therapy uses food to help prevent or mitigate a chronic condition in conjunction with other treatments you may be receiving. Always discuss a new diet with your doctor to ensure it is safe for you.

Which conditions do you provide medical nutrition therapy for?

Medical nutrition therapy is provided for the following chronic diseases: fatty liver, osteopenia/osteoporosis, heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, IBS, diverticular disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and gout. Others conditions include menopause, weight management, building lean muscle, disordered eating and emotional eating. Please call to inquire about a specific condition that is not listed to determine if we can provide the right care for you.

Do you offer meal plans?

If you are looking for a 7 day/week meal plan, we highly recommend getting the Nutrigenomix testing. This test offers 1 – 2 month meal plans that are based on your results. This is also a great learning tool as the recipes and food options given in the Nutrigenomix meal plans are specifically geared toward optimal nutrition based on your genetics. I can go over your test results with you and help you strategize timing of meals and how to swap ingredients for your preferences. Depending on the diet we decide on, other options for meal plans can be discussed.

Do You Support GLP-1 Medication Clients?

Medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound are helping people achieve significant weight loss, but without proper nutritional guidance, they come with real risks. Rapid weight loss on GLP-1 and GLP-1/GIP medications often leads to lean muscle mass loss, nutrient deficiencies, and a condition called sarcopenia, where the body breaks down the very muscle tissue it needs to maintain a healthy metabolism.

Our Registered Dietitian provides the expert support that should accompany every GLP-1 prescription. Angela works with clients on these medications to:

Prioritize protein intake to protect lean mass and prevent muscle loss during rapid weight reductionEnsure adequate nutrition despite reduced appetite, focusing on nutrient-dense foods, proper hydration, and electrolyte balanceMonitor body composition with DEXA scans to track exactly how much fat vs. muscle is being lost — not just what the scale saysBuild a safe off-ramp plan using a high-protein, low-carbohydrate strategy designed to help you maintain your results after discontinuing medication — because weight regain is one of the biggest challenges people face when coming off GLP-1s

Whether you’ve just been prescribed a GLP-1 medication or you’re already on one and want to make sure you’re losing fat, not muscle, our dietitian and DEXA monitoring give you the data and the plan to do it right.
